Well, the Summer Season is over, the grass has stopped growing and most of the jobs needed around the houses have been completed. It is back to painting time and the first task is to finish a painting I started some fifteen years ago. It is of a friend with his 1960s  BMW motor cycle. I grew tired of painting the fiddly engine bits so put the painting to one side. The friend turned up a short while ago and asked if I still had the painting…? And could I finish it…? So, with a little turning back of the style clock, some transparent paints I haven’t used for years and the time to do it, I am, once again, painting fiddly engine bits.

I am now a member of the Colchester Art Society, the august group that was so close yet so far when I started at Colchester School of Art back in the early 1960s – http://www.colchesterartsociety.co.uk/members-gallery-alan-taylor.html

Also had a good mention on Facebook by ‘The Artist’ magazine. ‘Spring’ seems to be starting off rather well so far.

I have now been included in the ‘Wivenhoe’s History’ website. The relevant page can be seen at  <http://www.wivenhoehistory.org.uk/content/new-contributions/alan-taylor> and there is lots more of interest on other pages.

My painting for the Artist & Illustrator Magazine ARTISTS OF THE YEAR COMPETITION/EXHIBITION did not win the £1,000 First Prize  :-(    Getting into the final 50 out of thousands who entered is, however, very satisfying  :-)

Meanwhile, one of my more recent pieces – ‘Mr Husk’s House’ – has been welcomed by The Sentinel Gallery, Wivenhoe, Essex and will be going on show shortly.

Have sent a digital image of my first ‘Wivenhoe’ painting for 45 years to the Sentinel Gallery in Wivenhoe, Essex. They are holding an exhibition in February and expressed an interest in my earlier ‘Wivenhoe’ paintings. First indications are favourable so I shall press on with a few more on the Wivenhoe theme.

ARTISTS OF THE YEAR COMPETITION/EXHIBITION

The Painting has gone to London! The Chelsea Magazine Co. Ltd. very kindly allowed me to post it to their office so they could take it in to The Mall Galleries at the correct time on the correct date – something I could not guarantee whilst relying on La Poste and The Royal Mail. It is, I hope, sufficiently well packed to arrive without mishap but there is insurance cover should the worst happen. Fingers crossed for a few days now.

February 2016 Saatchi sold a painting of mine yesterday, 25/02/2016. It was ‘Crossroads’, one of series based on local views I started as something to keep as reminders of our life in France when we return to the UK. ‘Crossroads’ was the second of the four so far painted to sell… I might have to make do with photographs.

February 2016. Last month I volunteered my services to Combe Rail, a new group dedicated to re-opening the Ilfracombe to Barnstaple railway line in Devon, UK. I thought, being in France, there wasn’t much I could do but I was welcomed with open arms. Almost immediately, I was given a number of tasks in preparation for a showcase in March. Number one task was a vertical banner. Having designed it here, I sent the image as an attachment to Combe Rail and it has now been printed out as an 80cms x 200cms plastic banner…

February 2016 and I stumbled across a hitherto unseen photo on the website of Sam Herman, studio glass artist. It shows Sam (seated) in the hot glass studio at Stourbridge College of Art in 1965 or ’66, Mick Halligan (leaning over), Alan Dohnal (with spectacles and tie, glass technician) and myself in the background standing by to collect some molten glass ready to put on Sam’s creation. We all look so young…

Just before Christmas 2015, a book was published that included a photograph I had taken almost 50 years earlier. It is the photograph I took of Pat Osborne in the back doorway at 1 Hill Road, Lye and subsequently posted on a Stourbridge College of Art Facebook page. Sam Knee, writer of the book – ‘The Bag I’m In’, ISBN 978-1-908714-26-8 – saw the photo on the Facebook page and contacted me to request permission to use it. Here is the photo…
